If completing all of NZ's 9 great walks is on your bucket list, you'll be happy to know that 3 are centrally located on the North Island and within a days drive of each other: Waikaremoana, Tongariro and Whanganui.
The “Great Walks” are New Zealand’s premier national park tracks. They are highly regarded by the tramping community both locally and word-wide for the access they provide to some of NZ's best awe-inspiring landscapes. Managed by DOC, these tracks are well maintained with support facilities which include: information centres, toilets, huts and campsites.
Most trampers will start out east at Urewera National Park with the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk as a 3 day warm-up/equipment-test for the tougher 4 day Tongariro Northern Circuit, and follow that with the 3 or 5 day paddle of the Whanganui Journey.
